About Sunset Cooperative Nursery School
Sunset Cooperative Nursery School is a parent participation preschool where children are given the space to play, explore, create, build relationships, take risks, solve problems, and grow at their own pace.
Being a cooperative nursery school means parents are an active and essential part of school life. Each family is required to work at the school, giving parents the opportunity to watch their children grow and learn in an environment that encourages creativity, cooperation, friendship, and just plain fun.
Parents work alongside our experienced teachers and contribute their time and talents to help make the school run. This participation gives parents a unique opportunity to be part of their child’s preschool experience and is one of the core beliefs of Sunset. Our school has always been a community with goals for adults as well as children, where parents learn, connect, and build lasting relationships.
Our Director and teachers bring experience, consistency, and care to the program, while our families help make Sunset the community it is. As a nonprofit cooperative, Sunset is supported through tuition, fundraising, and the participation of every member family.
What It Means to Be a Cooperative
At Sunset, parent participation is not simply encouraged. It is a core part of our program and a requirement for every family.
Parents work alongside teachers in the classroom and contribute to the life of the cooperative through school jobs, fundraising, committees, the Board, maintenance, and other responsibilities shared across the community.
Parent participation has been at the heart of Sunset since the school began in 1940. Generations of parents have helped shape the school, from fundraising for its first permanent home to building and improving the play yard, supporting parent education, and coming together to rebuild the school in 2010. That same spirit continues today. By working in the classroom, parents become part of their child’s preschool experience and get to see firsthand how their child plays, works through challenges, and grows throughout the year.
Sunset Nursery School isn’t just childcare. For 86 years, it has been a place dedicated to caring for children and families.
Sunset Today
Today, parent participation remains at the core of Sunset. The building has changed, generations of children have come through its doors, and the neighborhood around us has changed too. What has stayed the same is the belief that children thrive through play and that parents have an important role in their preschool experience.
Children come here to play, explore, create, connect, and grow. Parents come here to participate, learn, contribute, and be part of their child’s experience.
