ADMISSIONS

HOURS AND DATES
Sunset Cooperative Nursery School is structured on half-day sessions, five days a week.
Our morning session runs from 9 am-12 pm, and our afternoon session runs from 1 pm-4 pm.
An extended care (8 am-9 am & 4 pm-5 pm) and lunch program (12 pm-1 pm) are available on a limited basis.
The fall semester runs roughly August to December and the spring semester runs roughly January to June. Summer school is available on a limited basis.

* COVID-19 Update
Please note that the daily schedule described above reflects our school operations prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and shelter-in-place. We have modified our operations to adhere to public health directives and ensure the safety and health of our staff and families, while still preserving the same spirit of play, love, and connection that is so integral to our school.

We currently offer two options to our families:
1) A hybrid program that is half in-person, and half virtual participation. Children in the hybrid program rotate between 2 weeks of in-person school and 2 weeks of "Sunset at Home". Participating children are divided into separate cohorts of 12 children apiece. During their in-person rotation, cohorts are at school at their assigned time, either in the morning (8 am-12 pm) or afternoon (12:30-4:30 pm). Only 1 cohort is at school at a time, and each is assigned 1 teacher who only works with that cohort. During their virtual "Sunset at Home" rotation, children participate in (all completely optional) play and storytime via Zoom with their teacher and cohort; 1-on-1 Zoom time with their teacher; watch pre-recorded read-alouds and singalongs; and receive a biweekly fun bag, with materials to inspire creative play.
2) A 100% virtual participation program. Families who have chosen this option may participate in all the "Sunset at Home" programming as described above.

APPLICATION PROCESS
Sunset Cooperative Nursery School is open to all children between the ages of two and five, and they need not be toilet trained. To begin the application process, your child must be eligible for enrollment in the following school year. Here are the steps:

Attend an Open House. We host two Open Houses in the Fall. Please check out the dates and sign up on our Events page. Our Open Houses are opportunities for you to learn more about our play-based school. The Open Houses last approximately an hour and a half. Once you have attended an Open House, you will have the chance to sign up for a tour.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our Open Houses will be held online this year.

The Fall Open House dates are:  Thursday, October 1, 2020
                                            Thursday, November 19, 2020

Take a tour: On the tour, you will experience a day in the life of a Sunset student and have an opportunity to get to meet all of the teachers and ask all the questions you can think of.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our tours will most likely look different during this admissions cycle. Further details will be provided during our Open Houses.

Application Form & Non-Refundable Fee: If you would like to continue the application process after touring the school, return a completed application form along with a $30 non-refundable processing fee by the deadline given. The non-refundable fee is used to defray the cost of processing the application and is required in order to continue the application process. Please note, the fee is not an indication of acceptance.

Application Acceptance: Once all meetings have been completed, we will contact applicants to  discuss membership.

A Meeting with the Director: During the spring semester we will begin the "interview" process by setting up meetings with the Director, determined by position in the waiting pool and the requirements (e.g. child's age, target enrollment date) of the space that is available.

Wait Pool: Applications are recorded as they are received. The waiting pool is defined by several factors: date of receipt of application, age, gender and presence of siblings and/or returning families and AM or PM availability.

Keep in Touch: Let us know you are still interested as the year goes by, check-in with one of our membership chairpersons. Write a letter explaining your reasons for wanting to join a cooperative. We love to hear from you.

Megan's Law: All family names through the California Department of Justice Megan's Law database.

Immunizations: Please read our immunization requirements.
