ANTIRACISM STATEMENT
We are living through a pivotal time in history. The time to make lasting and revolutionary change is now. What we do now will be remembered for years to come and have a lasting impact on our children — our future generation. In that spirit, we are taking action to stand with the Black community seeking equality and justice. We believe Black Lives Matter.
On behalf of the board of directors, we want to share with you our commitment to putting in the antiracist work that will serve as the foundation of our organization. “Antiracism is the practice of identifying, challenging, and changing the values, structures, and behaviors that perpetuate systemic racism.” - Ontario Anti-Racism Secretariat
At Sunset Cooperative Nursery School, our goal is to foster a community of love and learning through connection and play. By way of empathetic leadership and modeling, we are committed to cultivating diversity, equity, and inclusion; and encourage children to recognize, understand, and celebrate differences. We stand against all forms of racism and oppression and are committed to ensuring we provide a safe, welcoming, and supportive place for children and adults of all backgrounds to grow and thrive.
In our community, we continuously strive to ensure all individuals are treated with respect and dignity without discrimination or harassment on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, disability, marital status, citizenship, national origin, genetic information, or any other human characteristic. This at times can be a challenging task, but we vow to hold each other accountable.
There are action items being set in place as we move forward as an antiracist organization including, but not limited to:
Community
- Continuing education for parents and teachers as social justice advocates.
- Fostering an anti-bias play-based curriculum.
- Reviewing and editing all of our policies and procedures.
